Global E&C
Established in 2019 and with over 1,000 colleagues and staff, Global E&C are a leading integrated EPC contractor servicing the UK's critical energy infrastructures. Rooted in the global oil and gas industry, the business was embracing the opportunity to transition towards the renewable energy sector and recognised that their core customers required engineering and maintenance support to transition their operations both on and off shore towards a decarbonised business model.
Against a backdrop of a highly ambitious, dynamic and entrepreneurial organisational culture, this was an exciting time for Global E&C. With existing revenues of £100m, they believed that by positioning towards the 'alternative energy' market, they would not only sustain but grow their organisation over the long-term. Key to achieving this would be recruiting and retaining the right senior talent to support existing clients to reposition and foster new relationships with emerging players in this space.
BDM - Alternative Energy
In 2024, a decision was made to recruit a new Business Development Manager focused exclusively on developing business in the renewable energy market. This would be the first recruit of several over time, and the start of Global E&C's growth into this sector.
The remit of the Business Development Manager (BDM) would be appointed to support Global E&C’s growth ambitions by identifying, engaging with and ultimately winning contracts with new customers in the alternative energy market. Supporting the global decarbonisation effort by delivering innovative turnkey engineering projects for both traditional energy customers and increasingly customers in the alternative energy sector (eg: alternative fuels, hydrogen, nuclear, wind, biofuels, CHP etc), Global E&C wished to appoint an experienced BDM to focus on such work across the UK.
Sherrington Associates were retained as the exclusive search partner in mid-2024, to find and recruit this person for Global E&C.
The Search
Requiring a candidate with an extensive record of business development success in the alternative energy sector required our team to carry out in-depth research for several weeks, in order to identify, engage and attract high-calibre candidates. Having worked closely with the client to identify a compelling Recruitment Pack, our research team used this to showcase the opportunity to candidates, gaining the interest of several highly-relevant applicants in the early weeks of the search.
Our research covered all angles of the alternative energy sector including hydrogen, nuclear, solar, biofuels and wind (offshore and onshore) and within a few short weeks a highly-relevant shortlist of capable sales leaders were assembled. Assessing them for their ability to develop and execute a strategic development plan for this new division was paramount. Using a combination of in-person competency interviews both at our offices in Chester and off-site in Glasgow, as well as carrying out psychometrics and values assessments, we deselected the shortlist to a selection of six candidates for our client to interview. We submitted the final shortlist on-time along with a full report detailing strengths and weaknesses identified through our assessments, to be used as an interview-guide by our client.
The Result
After supporting the client through their interviews and collating feedback, an offer was finally made and a candidate was successfully appointed in September 2024. Commenting on the search assignment, the Lead Researcher for the project, Joe Onions said...
We enjoyed supporting Global E&C on this key appointment. Knowing our work has helped them support their clients with their decarbonisation journey is incredibly rewarding.
